This week we attempted to reframe sleepless nights — a problem that came from a listener. It’s a hard one, especially given that Nat hasn’t had a full night’s sleep in eight years. Gasp. Although perhaps many of you can relate? And frankly, I don’t sleep as well as I used to either. Simon and I do lots of shifting and asking each other, “What’s up over there?”
On the episode I wonder if we can reframe being shocked awake by a baby as akin to an excellent cold plunge — the kind you seek out at the spa? A health-inducing shock to the body?
In the episode we also discuss how constraints imposed through sleepless nights could lead to generating art. Nat wrote her PhD in the middle of the night — grasping at her raw moments of brilliance. I’m all for a notebook and dreamstates.
Whatever your experience of sleeplessness, we both agree that staying open to however your community steps up to help is key. You might not find your soulmate friend who thinks exactly like you, but someone will be there for you if you can stay open to receiving care. Even if it’s your dad buying you a case of formula. (Inside joke for listeners!)
If you’re suffering some insomnia right now, this a great chili for any time of day! Or night!
Turkey Chili
Brown 1 package of minced turkey.
Add a finely diced onion, two large cloves of garlic and a good handful of mushrooms, also chopped pretty small.
Season the mixture with a tbsp of chili powder, a tsp of smoked paprika, and salt/pepper to taste.
Add a can of diced tomatoes and a can of mixed beans (or just kidney beans but I prefer the mix!) bring the whole pot to a boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Then lower temp to simmer, throw a lid on it and walk away! Let it simmer for as long as possible as it will get better and better as the flavors come together. I love a mug of this healthy goodness with a swirl of hot sauce to mix in for good measure.
