Reframing the Inside Joke with R. Eric Thomas
This week we reframed pop culture as self-care (or reframing the inside joke) with author R. Eric Thomas. In a wonderfully meandering conversation we talked about faith, office cake, gardening, hiking up (and then running down) mountains, looking to Oprah as a way to prepare for big feelings, and using Chekhov for life metaphors. Finally, we landed on using pop culture references as bridges to help us connect with others. We really hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
R. Eric Thomas is a television writer, playwright, and author of Here for It: Or, How to Save Your Soul in America. His latest book is Congratulations, The Best Is Over! For four years, Eric was a Senior Staff Writer at Elle.com, where he wrote a column called Eric Reads the News. This past week he gave Reframeables a shout out in his weekly humor newsletter. He lives in Philadelphia, where he is a long-running host of The Moth StorySlams.

Later this month we will be guests on a food-focused podcast talking about our online cookbook: A Different Kind of Comfort Food. Some of you already have it in your cookbook collections (thanks for your support!). We’d love to know your thoughts on recipes that have worked for you in your own kitchen…and the ones that haven’t. That kind of feedback will make for great podcast anecdotes. Please leave us a comment below and we’ll share it in our convo with Anthrodish.
Stay tuned for more details…
In the meantime, here’s a Fall soup recipe from ADKOCF. Call it a little newsletter amuse bouche:
This mural by Megan Oldhues is a new addition to the Junction, the neighbourhood where we both live. Beyond it adding to the street scape, what makes it especially cool it’s on the back of a building. It’s designed to be hidden!
We see this piece as a reframing tool — a hidden gem. It’s beauty that is in some way hiding in play sight, offering us a new and unexpected perspective on a street and alley we think we know. It’s disruptive, making the mundane new. What gem is hiding in your neighbourhood? Send us a pic and we’ll post it on our instagram.
